How to help children brush their teeth properly

Start brushing your baby's teeth as soon as the first milk tooth breaks through (usually at around 6 months, but it can be earlier or later). The surfaces of new permanent teeth can take up to three years to strengthen fully. So from nine and up, try moving your child to a preteen toothpaste like Aquafresh Advance Toothpaste. Less abrasive than regular toothpaste, your child can brush away with all the grown-up benefits, from cavity prevention to fighting plaque. All with a minty blend that gets them ready for adult toothpaste when the time comes. You can start brushing your baby's teeth as soon as they start to come through. Use a baby toothbrush with a tiny smear of fluoride toothpaste. These new permanent teeth will keep arriving over the following years, and even then, their surfaces can take up to three years to reach full strength. This is an important time for brushing, and a preteen toothbrush like our Aquafresh Advance Toothbrush can help bridge the gap to an adult brush. With a smaller head and mixed bristles designed for small mouths, and a flexible handle that helps kids brush away with less risk that they will damage their gums.

In some cases, kids’ teeth can be at more risk of cavities and specific oral care products may be appropriate. This will all be covered in your early dentist visits, where they will be able to recommend the best toothpaste for your child. How about mouthwash?Children over 7 and adults should brush at least twice daily with a toothpaste containing 1,350-1,500ppm fluoride. If you choose to give your child sweet foods or fruit juice, only give them at mealtimes. Remember to dilute 1 part juice to 10 parts water. Your child should have no more than 1 drink of fruit juice (150ml) in any 1 day as part of their 5 A Day. Carry on helping your child brush their teeth until you're sure they can do it well enough themselves. This will normally be until they're at least 7. Tooth decay, also known as dental decay or dental caries, is a major health concern worldwide and is still a big problem in the UK.
