We might not have any beaches in Surrey, but this didn’t stop the makers of this classic Carry On film using Frensham Ponds, to the south of Farnham, to represent the American coastline. The true story of the lifelong romance between novelist Iris Murdoch and her husband John Bayley, Iris stars Dame Judi Dench, Kate Winslet, Jim Broadbent - and the River Wey. Cameron Diaz and Jude Law were among a host of stars who descended on Shere for the filming of romantic comedy The Holiday. A big screen movie adaptation of the celebrated theatre classic by Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine, Into the Woods is directed by Rob Marshall and stars Meryl Streep and Johnny Depp. Rapunzel’s castle is a half-historical, half-new creation making use of Waverley Abbey near Farnham. The location work - usually one of the most costly features of scripted television - is plentiful and the acting is more or less solid throughout. Everyone’s favourite scene in Love Actually - the bit where they show the arrivals hall at Heathrow Airport - was actually shot at Epsom Downs Racecourse. Another airport in the film was actually Sandown Park in Esher, which was transformed into Milwaukee International Airport – apparently, if you freeze frame as Colin is coming out of the doors of the airport, you can see the Sandown Park logo on the doors. The film is not perfect. There is little doubt that a couple of the twists and turns aren't that twisty. Its not fatal but it is slightly disappointing because most of this is so good. The "major" flaw, and its really me just quibbling, is the Barton character himself, who is much too good to be believed. Its a flaw that is in all the films, but is most readily apparent in this the one film that is most firmly rooted in the real world. The trouble is that Barton is too perfect. He always gets out of trouble and always looks damn near perfect doing it. He is damn near perfect in everything he does and so seems at times completely unreal. He is "the prefect British gentleman" always looking and acting exactly right. Its a the type of thing that satirists and comedians would rip to shreds. I mean look at the way Barton looks all the way through the climatic battle with the villains, he's perfect, even at the final fade out. Starring Jenny Agutter, Bob Hoskins and Lucy Drive, Outside Bet sees a life-long group of friends at the bad end of a redundancy pay-out and invest their savings into a racehorse. Scenes were shot at the Esher racecourse.

Not only have Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie been making quite a stir in Richmond by moving to the town during filming, but Dunsfold Park was also invaded by zombies as part of the nightmarish post-apocalyptic film. Still this is a really good movie. Its a wonderful mystery of the sort they don't make any more. Absolutely worth seeing if you get the chance. The scenes where Peter O’Toole comes off his motorbike were shot at the largest National Nature Reserve in the south-east, Chobham Common.
