When it comes to the skin, oil breeds more oil, right?! At least that’s what I was taught for years. And because of this teaching, which I initially learned aboutin some teenage beauty magazine, I spent my teenage and early adulthoodyears purchasing facial products to rid my skin of the dreaded o word: oil. To be honest, the expensive products I used almost seemed to create more oil on my face, which resulted in acne flare-ups, frustration, and scars. It was a vicious cycle. With Vitamin C, you should never mix ingredients like benzoyl peroxide, retinol, AHAs/BHAs, and niacinamide. Yes, vitamin C-based lotions with proven efficacy lighten the appearance of hyperpigmentation. They take around 16 weeks to reduce skin spots and offer a blemish-free look. Vitamin C, when combined with Vitamin E to stabilize the ingredient, work together to feed the skin with antioxidants to neutralize free radical damage(sun spots), repair and prevent damage from the sun, and acne scars.

Argan Oil: Argan oil is extracted from the fruit of the argan tree in Morocco. Argan oil is rich infatty acids, vitamin E and A, and antioxidants. These “secret weapons” make the oil a moisturizing skincare option. Here’s an excellent article from the Alternative Medicine Review about argan oil. Alternatives to argan oil, include: jojoba, grapeseed, apricot, and sweet almond oil. As I began to research and make products for my home and body, I discovered something fascinating about skincare and oils. Manyof ourancestors used oil to moisturize theirskin. As it turns out, oil isn’t such a bad word. In fact, the right oil (or oils) can be pretty amazing when it comes to nourishing the skin! Even major news sources and celebritieshave started sharing the long-standing practice of using oil as a moisturizer. According to an article via The Huffington Post, Hillary Preston shares, “When oils are applied to the skin, they are absorbed directly into the top layers of the epidermis, where they instantly go to work to improve the lipid barrier function.” Manosroi, Aranya et al. Anti-aging efficacy of topical formulations containing niosomes entrapped with rice bran bioactive compounds. Pure options offer lots of benefits, though there are many excellent blends on the market, too. Apply to damp skin twice a day. Use within two weeks. Frequently Asked Questions What is rosehip seed oil?Knott, A, et al. Topical treatment with coenzyme Q10-containing formulas improves skin's Q10 level and provides antioxidative effects. Biofactors. doi: 10.1002/biof.1239 In a 12-week study in 32 people, taking a 100-mg rosehip tablet each day significantly decreased abdominal fat, compared with the control group. The authors attributed this effect to tiliroside, a potent antioxidant that may increase fat metabolism ( 20).

When combined with my two favorite complexion oils—almond and jojoba—it makes an incredibly nourishing lotion that’s perfect for all skin types. Almond oil is rich in Vitamin E and antioxidants, and has been shown to be hypoallergenic so it won’t break you out. Jojoba oil acts like a liquid wax forming a protective layer over the skin and protecting it from harsh elements. In addition, using vitamin C directly on your skin has been shown to significantly increase collagen synthesis and cell turnover — the rate at which skin cells replenish. Yes, you can use vitamin C body lotion at night as it improves collagen production, repairs damaged cells and offers elasticity. It also helps reduce the appearance of aging signs. It is suggested to add 2-4 drops of rosehip seed oil to your DIY moisturizer. Can I use rosehip seed oil on sensitive skin?

CBD (Hemp)

Rosehip oil is a popular anti-aging substance in the beauty community, though research supporting its benefits is limited. It’s made by cold pressing rose hips and extracting their natural oils ( 10, 11). Rosehip seeds are high in polyunsaturated fats, which support a healthy skin membrane and protect your skin from inflammatory compounds, such as ultraviolet (UV) rays, cigarette smoke, and pollution ( 12, 13). While rose hips appear to improve osteoarthritis pain, more research is needed to better understand appropriate dosages. May help with fat loss

Mármol, Inés et al. Therapeutic Applications of Rose Hips from Different Rosa Species. International journal of molecular sciences vol. 18,6 1137. doi:10.3390/ijms18061137 They’re also rich in disease-fighting antioxidants, such as vitamin C, catechins, quercetin, and ellagic acid. A diet rich in these compounds can help lower inflammation and oxidative stress in your body ( 2, 6). When browsing products, you'll want to pay attention to the source of the oil, or more specifically, how it's derived from roses. "Look for rosehip specifically. Rose oil is not the same," says Dr. Engelman. "Rosehip oil is extracted from the fruit seeds of a rose. The fruits are small bulbous plants, and the seeds inside are cold-pressed to extract the oil from the pressure." Ingredients I like to slather it on damp skin in the morning after washing my face and at night right before bed. I find that applying it to slightly damp skin helps it sink in better, otherwise it just creates a shiny film top of my skin. And while I mainly use on my face, it’s also perfect as a hand and body lotion on days when you’re feeling especially dry. Additionally, a review of three studies noted that people taking rosehip powder were twice as likely to report improvements in osteoarthritis pain. Still, a major caveat is the limited number of studies ( 18).

Rosehip oil may also aid wound healing. In a recent study, rats treated with this oil had significantly faster wound healing and less scar development than the control group. However, human research is needed ( 15). May reduce arthritis pain Truth be told, I live and die by moisturizers. My skin has always been dry, but age combined with colder than normal weather has me clinging to my jar of shea butter for dear life these days. But recently I heard about rosehip oil and the amazing benefits it has on skin—especially when it comes to fine lines, scars and age spots (oh, the aging trifecta!) In one small, 8-week study, taking 3 mg of rosehip powder daily led to a significant decrease in skin wrinkles and significant increase in skin moisture content and elasticity ( 13). A few years after changing our eating habits, I began to question the products my family used ( read my fullstory). The first product that came into question was my makeup. Why I went with makeup I don’t know, but for some reason makeup was my first priority when it came to sourcing better products. I made the switch to homemade foundation powder, and I couldn’t believe just how easy it was to make something for my body at home, in my own kitchen. Remove 1-4 drops of rosehip oil from your DIY moisturizer if you find it too oily or heavy. It may take some experimentation to get it right! Remember, a little goes a long way.
