If the novel had more narrative focus, more world building with historical context this could an interesting read. Brilliant character in Cadi , strong yet vulnerable , in love with her partner Jez but now torn away from each other having to ensure the perils of the war. A different type of read from those I normally lean towards, this was a delightful break from one world inhabited by horror, to another, more real one, set at the start of the second World War.

Cadi and Poppy, escape the humdrum life in a Welsh mining town with its pattern of marriage and babies all that's ahead for them. They secure jobs in a local pub, and Cadi's blossoming relationship with a handsome dock worker deepens after he rescues her from a terrifying encounter. She looks forward to sharing many more Katie Flynn stories, which she and her mother devised together, with readers in the years to come.Flynn looks at the joys of leaving home to discover yourself, and the relinquishment of the protection and comfort of a family bubble. The Girl From Penny Lane is another incredible work from an author that is known for engaging historical fiction! The idea that Cadi had nightmares after the explosion at the Greyhound pub was not carried out throughout the rest of the novel, it was mentioned once and never again. Jez has joined the RAF and Poppy and Izzy have joined the Waaf, leaving Cadi behind in Liverpool helping out in the new hotel with Maria.

The Winter Rose: The heartwarming festive novel from the

As the title suggests, the picture that’s painted in this novel is a very appealing, rose-coloured image of wartime Liverpool, which I found very easy to get lost in. She joined a writing circle and it helped not only inspire and focus her but got her started on writing short stories and articles and working on her writing. This is the 30th book, but considering Alex has survived "Kill Alex Cross" before, chances are he survives this one. Cadi has always believed that their love can weather any storm but as the snow sweeps in, she faces an impossible choice. I really enjoyed immersing myself in this book and look forward to the next one taking me on another journey. In her darkest hour, Cadi is comforted by her friends, and with their support and guidance she begins to see a light at the end of the tunnel. Two young girls are desperate to leave their mundane life in a small Welsh village and head to Liverpool where they hope to be able to join one of the forces at the start of World War Two.

The Winter Rose by Katie Flynn | Goodreads

Despite this there are two young lads that seem intent on being part of Cadi’s life; Jez the docker and Greyhound regular, and Aled the farmer’s son, who her father hopes she’ll marry. A lovely, easily read and meaningful tale written by one of my favourite authors, can't wait for the next book! The years that come after see Nellie do her best to take care of Lilac as she grows from an infant to a young girl.

The story does deal with some dramatic and dark themes, such as domestic abuse, poverty, the dangers of mining and the Liverpool Blitz. Cadi also appeared as someone who follows gossip and rumours without seeing the facts; this is evident in her feud with Daphne and her relationship with Aled.

The Winter Rose: The brand new heartwarming Christmas 2022

Two young girls, with minimal life experience, try to do their civic duty and sign up to join the war efffort. Many thanx to the publishers and Netgalley for giving me the opportunity tor read and review this book. I've never read a book by this author that I've not loved and could easily rate higher than five stars and this one is no exception.I enjoyed this book which explored their relationships with boys and different members of the community. The village in which they have grown up is very insular and protected, there is a path expected of them which they step off of when they embark on the journey of a lifetime to Liverpool.
