Kein "Lexikon", auch wenn der Titel dies andeutet, sondern eher eine Sammlung kleiner Essays zum Thema "Leben und Werke der Brontes". It also made me feel slightly sorry for the poor man as I think generally too much was asked from him and he could not cope. Always thought provoking, he does not stand on an academic high-horse, for example he is not afraid to tell the reader that although when Emily died the manuscript of the second novel she was believed to be writing was not found (it may have been destroyed by Charlotte) you can if you wish still read it, since a psychic has been in lengthy communication with Emily and written it at her dictation!Erst einmal: das Buch liest sich wirklich flott weg und hebt sich durch den populärwissenschaftlichen, oft sogar humorvollen Stil erfrischend von den oft fast melodramatischen Werken über die Brontes ab.

All in all I enjoyed this book immensely and could not put it down which is unusual for me as I usually struggle with nonfiction books and tend to steer clear of them.
