Just when I thought there was no more room for clever game design in the genre, we have Codenames, Werewords, Wordsy, and now Decrypto! It was nominated for Best Party Game in The Dice Tower's 2018 Gaming Awards, [8] a runner up for Best Party Game in BoardGameGeek's 2018 Golden Geek Award, [9] and a finalist for Best Multiplayer General Strategy Game in the International Gamers Awards.
It could be simplified for younger kids with a bit of help (we are thinking of working at it with our 5 year old as she loves reading and writing) but it might be a slower and more obvious game for the adults.To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average.
This list has wallet-sized and wallet-friendly games; games for the first timer and for friends who have been playing for years. But I’m sure you can also see that Decrypto is one of the most monochrome things we’ve been excited about since… since Escape from the Aliens in Outer Space.Both teams put up a cardboard screen into which they slot four secret words, words the opposing team will never see. I had noticed the increasing mentions about the rise of fascism in other countries (1930's) as the show went on, with the usual talk of not needing to worry about it. The game can play a minimum of three players, however the game works better with four players rather than two and really comes to life with six or more players as you will then have three players on each team – allowing for unique clues. Decrypto is a simple code-cracking team game in which each group tries to discern a 3 digit code by interpreting messages posed by teammates while at the same time trying to figure out the opposing team’s codes. Maybe they’ve guessed it’s “Summer” or maybe not, but they never even need to guess the exact words, they just have to build up enough information to guess the other team’s codes based on the clues they hear.
Comparable to the smash-hit Codenames, but different enough in its own right, this game is ideal for family get-togethers, for a night down the pub with friends or as a bit of light relief at the beginning or end of a games night – don’t let Decrypto go under your radar!It sets you the simplest of challenges and creates the most convoluted complications as you and your friends try to tell secrets out in the open, right in front of each other. The first player will draw a secret card from the code deck, that lists a three-digit code, containing numbers one to four which refers back to the secret word in your team’s panel. It is not a traditional silly party game, and unlike quiz games that can make you feel stupid for not knowing something, this just challenges you with being diverse with your answers and how you might be able to draw connections between words.
Each team also takes the Code card deck that matches their color screen (white or black) and a Note Sheet. Sure, they set up later rounds for success or failure, but in and of themselves, the first round or two should be smooth for most teams in most sessions of Decrypto.Its lighter than Codenames, but it still requires a level of thoughtfulness that wouldn't pair well with jello shots and jager bombs. And if you are one of those players who was disappointed when you found out you didn't always get a chance to guess the other teams actual words, this is a exactly what you are looking for. Trying to decipher the keywords is a necessary part of trying to decrypt your opponent’s clues, and it’s always fun to see how successful you were in guessing the right keywords or if you were just plain lucky. Part of the fun for some party games is when you have people who don’t know each other too well or (even better) live on either side of the pond. There are others eavesdropping on your messages, and if they can decrypt your clues, well, you’re going to be in an extremely bad way.
