As good as this album is, I suspect some will inevitably question whether Memento Mori is as good as March 1990’s Violator or its March 1993 followup, Songs of Faith and Devotion.

Their progression in their latest years have heard them move into darker, peakier, sadder and more industrial themes while drawing on deathly topoi. This is confirmed by the DR value, which is DR4 for the average value, with songs between DR3 and DR5, which is almost a record in terms of limiting dynamics, but a bad record! An album will most likely be recorded at high res these days yet could only be offered for distribution at a lower res. And if you have been following my reviews here, there, and everywhere, you know I tend to love it when artists make musical references to past works without stealing the entire concept (like numerous sampling artists might do).
