About this deal

Hailing from the Netherlands, I’m a skateboarding enthusiast, marathon runner, and a dedicated data junkie, tracking my happiness for over a decade.

And even though I don't have the power to control somebody else, and that sometimes is quite sad— because you know I actually have a better power and realising that you have that better power is kind of part of coming out of that in greatness that was that maybe happened to you during your childhood. He says “that if you strike a tuning fork that vibrates at 512 Hz, all other tuning forks of the same frequency would respond by humming. The result is her best work to date, offering warm, wise, and helpful ways we can experience happiness even when the odds are against us. There are challenging times that we all go through and in going through these, it gives us contrast, lessons to learn and enables us to see the beauty of the other side of the coin. I felt that there was a glib attitude toward suffering and a very superficial explanation of the "practicing". In other words, to become happy regardless of what destiny throws on our path, we need to learn to be optimistic. Somehow, all the droll tales of life in rural France and the Bay Area didn’t connect me to the practices of gratitude and self-reflection, the book’s ultimate destination.

And it also explains why you hear about studies that show people who live in slums in third world counties are just as happy as we are – they don’t think they have another choice in life. Perhaps at some point I will try another of her books or, once I have a better grasps of the basics of Buddhism, try this one again. By practicing things like mental resilience, meditation, and gratitude, you can learn to build your happiness from the inside out.In fact, this study by Smith, Compton and West (1995) shows that other approaches to building your happiness are strengthened when paired with meditation. They are showing that the brain, through self-directed focus, can actually change its neural patterns as a result of the thoughts we think – we can even dial up the “happiness set point! To me it all kind of comes back to something I’ve talked about before; it’s not really about what you do with your life but about how you go about it. So you should actually be a little bit judgmental of situations you should think about things and go. And we don't really like that like a lot of people don't like that because a lot of people choose misery.

I'd also check out Haley McGee on Instagram because there's a lot of stuff about like people pleasing here. How we respond to life's events do form the basis of our happiness, and often that unhappiness is rooted in unskillful responses to those incidents. Happiness for me stems first of all from being able to accept yourself completely just the way you are whether you're ugly, shy, short, overweight, missing a limb, poor, disabled and whatever other form of disadvantage you think being you brings. that convinced me that I could control the people around me, that if I was just a little bit calmer, a little bit nicer if I had a little less anxiety if I looked a certain way, then maybe other people around me would love me more maybe you know all I have to do. Try to avoid mental traps like jumping to conclusions or overestimating the impact of the situation.

I am a "recovering fretter" as well and had I not judged this book by it's cover, I might well have made it to a better place sooner. We can change the way we look, our jobs, where we live, our partners,… Things that used to be forever just a few generations ago are not anymore. My friend Rick Hanson, neuropsychologist and author of Buddha’s Brain: The Practical Neuroscience of Love, Happiness and Wisdom, believes we must compensate for how quickly we remember the negative things in life, by focusing on the good that is around us.

Well, watch Dan Gilberts TED talk for some really fascinating studies that show this ‘synthetic happiness’ is a real thing.
