About this deal

so much so that rather than enjoying Incendiary as a statement of our times etc etc, I cried all the way through. I only came across your name and work very recently (shameful really, but on the other hand, I now have a lovely stash of your books I can look forward to reading).

On both accounts, theses books, despite their rawness, have really spraked something inside me and I cannot wait to read Chis’s next novel. For all the toughness of Cleave's language, his self-congratulatory vernacular, Incendiary is sunk in bathos. The narrator is an obsessive---the kind who alphabetizes everything in her kitchen cupboards and freezer. She doesn’t have much childhood memories of the time she had spent in the palace but when she finally gets there, all her horrifying past and secrets unravels before her. After a depressing reading slump at the beginning of lockdown, I’ve since been on a bit of a winning streak with five-star books. Another stylistic change of pace you employee, that I find refreshing, is lack of use of quotation marks. You don’t know, you just have to live every single second of your life, as a Latin author would say, ‘carpe diem’.

I hate the way the narrator says “of” instead of “have” although I recognise the reasoning behind it. I was looking for a book to read whilst commuting from Kent to Canary Wharf and a collegue of mine gave me “Incendairy” I was captured from the first page and could not put it down. The concluding twist also blows up in Cleave's face (or rather: he blows it up in the reader's face): it is again a decent idea, but the panic he sets off with it hardly seems worth the trouble, his narrator (who can't swim: "I never learned. All this is mediated through the narrator's voice, which Cleave has tuned to a pitch-perfect degree.

If you are looking for a good book try The Secret Scripture, he, like you, has such a way with words that you feel you are inside the book, literally devouring it. Loosely inspired by the Spanish Inquisition in the 15th century, Incendiary is a more old-worldly, high-fantasy tale, which makes it even more atmospheric and absorbing. The current king is on a crusade to eliminate all magic users and she is a reluctant part of the resistance.

I’m not familiar with Zoraida Córdova’s previous works but I really wanted to give this a shot because I loved the synopsis. At the end of the book Little Bee, I discovered an advert for Incendiary, which I just finished reading. The first, and perhaps biggest, thing to note here is that, as it's written as a letter, the entire book is in the voice of the protagonist, who is not terribly well-educated and eschews the use of commas.I am hosting our recently formed book group and having loved The Other Hand, I suggested we read Incendiary.
