About this deal

For me it is the second part of the book where it becomes truly interesting as we follow them as they put all that they have learned into practice, and we find out if they are all successful or not and what happens to them as well as their intended targets.

Devine works at a prominent investment firm in Manhattan, traveling every day on the 6:20 train and dreaming of a better life. One final point: another reviewer thought one of the plotlines may be homophobic and asked for comments from someone from the LGBT community. Who hasn't wondered for a split second what the world would be like the object of your affliction ceased to exist? Darkly enriching…this intriguing tale of mystery, mayhem and murder is the perfect blend of intelligence and intricacy. Set in the 1950s, it is a comic crime thriller in which right from the start we know who the potential victims and murderers are, though we don't know how successful they will be until near the end.

I loved the upside-down aspect of being on the side of the murderer, understanding their motivation and cheering them on to their end goal. The obviously played-for-fun premise combines with Holmes' witty word play that had me smiling at nearly every page. Because readers (and the faculty) are, in essence, accessories before the fact, the biggest challenge for Holmes was to create several want-to-be murderers for whom readers would root. The events occurred in the 1950s but the setting barely lent anything to the story; it could’ve all happened within the last twenty years and there would’ve been no substantial difference. In the middle I had to remind myself that just like in the song ‘Escape’ there had to be another twist in each story.

The writing was witty without being exhausting, the dialogue flowed and the twists and turns conveyed just right. There are multiple POVs and an omniscient narrator, which I don't see a lot of but thought was the perfect choice for this book. His first novel, Where the Truth Lies, was nominated for a Nero Wolfe award for Best American Mystery Novel, was a Booklist Top Ten Debut Novel, and became a motion picture starring Colin Firth and Kevin Bacon. For a book set in the 1950s, much of the school's lessons seem especially like overkill (pun intended). There are one or two surprises along the way that you may not expect but it’s a book that has you rooting for the killer for a change. Set in the 1950s, the author creates an intriguing and atmospheric setting with a cast of interesting characters.
