In the end it didn't really matter after all who sent the messages, it was more about coming to terms with the loss of a sibling than anything truly murderous or scary. Yes, I am a mood reader, and sometimes I just do not fancy a book, but I finally wanted to read this one, and I did, and it was pretty awesome. The mystery isn't very complicated but it was enough to make my heart skip just a little bit in fear.

I also like how Fay's vulnerability is portrayed, and the multi-layered personality of Luisa during the flashbacks. Not only, Skye has to contend with her new roommates Fay and Danielle, and that comes with its own set of issues, but she now is receiving text messages from Luisa, from beyond the grave. I had such a fun time reading this (mostly because I read it all in one sitting, sat out in the sun! from what i remember the protagonist sister drowned in their pool some time back and she’s still flashbacking to it.With it based in a camp for teenagers grieving it caused the setting of the book to really intrigue me as i havent read anything like that before. How the mysterious texts (very PLL) were handled was amazing as Skye was just so level headed about the whole situation, keeping it as evidence and not freaking out like so many other high schoolers I've read about.

It also uses flashbacks to conjure up some powerful imagery, which will act as one of my most abiding memories of the book. It's quite difficult to explain, you get lots of snippets into what's happened before the death, and you can already see what's happened, the building up to it was slow, and I honestly felt bored reading it. Teenage Skye (her age isn't given but it appears she is about 15) loses her sister to a murder/drowning accident, a tragedy that rips apart her family and sends her into seclusion, denial, and an unhealthy extended mourning. It's hard finding good teenage chick-lit to fill the summer months as most of them are about some middle-class ditz falling in love with a boy from the wrong family and are about as edgy as a satsuma. Skye’s sister died last year in a tragic accident, so this summer Skye’s parents think that a camp for troubled teenagers might help her process her grief.I would loved to have seen more of Toby, who appears mainly in flashbacks, but who in just a few short scenes made me smile and maybe swoon a little, but don't tell anyone. Faye who was one of skyes room mates was a nice character but was one of those characters who seeked boys attention but i did end up feeling sorry for her at the end. When the mysterious text messages started (printed in bold on the page) I had to give myself a telling off for flicking ahead in the book to read what else was said between the two. Lying About Last Summer tells the story of Skye who after losing her sister, Luisa, in a swimming pool accident is sent to a camp for troubled grieving teens.

The book's central mystery was resolved much earlier than I was expecting, and instead giving way to an ending that was more dramatic and tense. It's a quick fab read that is soaked with tense suspense, realistic characters, sun drenched in mystery and shines brightly with beautiful writing. Disappointed that I had to struggle through 200 pages to get to a good bit but it was a very good bit. Debut author Sue Wallman deftly balances the plot of a thriller with a moving exploration of the effect of bereavement on the heroine, Skye, and the other teenagers in the story - it gives the book emotional depth, but you never get the 'ding, dong, issue coming through' feeling that you might in less capable hands. Loved this book - it's officially a Young Adult title and it's a very long time since I was a young adult, but the engaging central character and the twists and turns of the plot kept me reading.

What I found to be interesting here is how very different Skye was and how much had changed since her sister passed on.

The idea behind it was very good, but given that it plays such a big role in the book, it is a shame that it did not feel especially well realised. Wzruszyłam się na końcu i uważam że jest to książka o takiej tematyce że większość osób powinna to przeczytać.You may think that this piece has all the ingredients of your typical young adult thriller novel, however I personally feel that it is more a story of courage. There's something addicted about this book, and I can't put my finger on what it was that made me speed through. Every aspect of daily life is monitored for optimal health, and there are strict rules for everyone. Anyways, Skye is a character I can relate to, kind yet she keeps her emotions in, little soppy and over the top at some points but she's someone you could imagine as your best friend. Fast forward one year and Skye’s mother is packing her off for a summer getaway at Morley Hill Activity and Adventure Centre for six days and five nights of back-to-back activities all fully-funded by a charity for bereaved kids.
