About this deal

Dualchas". Comunn Eachdraidh Bharraidh agus Bhatarsaidh. Archived from the original on 5 July 2008 . Retrieved 29 March 2008. If you are interested in the story of the the SS Politician which ran aground off Eriskay with a quarter of a million bottles of whisky onboard (this real-life wartime event inspired the Whisky Galore book/movie), then I recommend this book written by Roger Hutchinson in 1998. The Slí na Sléibhe trail is around 2.4 km in length and it follows a loop. Unlike the other Gougane Barra Walks, this trail begins and ends in the Upper car park.

Whether you arrive by sea or air, explore by foot or bike, indulge in scenery, seafood or whisky (I’ll take all three please), this island will leave an irrevocable imprint on you. Barra ( / ˈ b ær ə/; Scottish Gaelic: Barraigh [ˈparˠaj] or Eilean Bharraigh [ˈelan ˈvarˠaj] ⓘ; Scots: Barra) is an island in the Outer Hebrides, Scotland, and the second southernmost inhabited island there, after the adjacent island of Vatersay to which it is connected by the Vatersay Causeway. The island is named after Saint Finbarr of Cork. Galloglas: Hebridean and West Highland Mercenary Warrior Kindreds in Medieval Ireland, John Marsden, 2003

As I type, I can’t help but think of the first time that I had a ramble around here. It was on a solo 5-day road trip in February 2017. As well as the usual post office, bank, and supermarket, there are several gift shops in the village as well as cafes, bars, and restaurants. Yup, you’ve guess it – this island eatery is also named after the aforementioned castle. AND, if you choose to eat alfresco you can gawk at said castle while you savour your seafood. Do expect some souvenir midge bites for the pleasure, however! It’s said that the city of Cork grew from here. Another legend explains how St. Finbarr banished a great serpent named Lú from the Gougane Barra Lake. Apparently Lú created the River Lee as it escaped his wrath. The Gougane Barra Church

More information is detailed here. If you’re not familiar with St. Finbarr, he’s the Patron Saint of Cork. It’s said that when he first arrived at Gougane Barra he was so blown away that he decided to build a Monastery on its grounds. A smaller medieval tower house, Dun Mhic Leoid, is in the middle of Loch St Clare on the west side of the island at Tangasdale. [28]If you’d rather treat yourself to something sugary then you might like to pop into the Hebridean Toffee Factory which sells mouth-watering gift boxes of Scottish tablet.

Now in the care of Historic Environment Scotland, the castle is currently closed to visitors (before Covid it was possible to visit by small boat).Visitors can also walk around Kisimul Castle (located on an islet at the harbour entrance), sample delicious handmade Scottish tablet from the Hebridean Toffee factory, and enjoy a wee dram at the Barra Distillery. Large modern building, family run, good food, nice location on the west coast of the island overlooking a beach near the main road. Tel 01871 810383.
