It is the only album I have ever heard where every song is 10/10 material. There are no bad moments where you think 'oh I wish they didn't do that, it would've been great otherwise'. This is an amazing achievement, considering a few months before they released one of the best songs ever made in the stand-alone single Stay Together. This album has absolutely everything. Caulfield, Keith (26 September 2008). "Ask Billboard: Blue Suede Shoes". Billboard. Archived from the original on 27 March 2013. The production of this album has gone down in music history as one of the toughest and most frought recordings ever. Anderson and Butler were pretty much at a knife edge with each other. Bulter wanted the album to sound one way and Anderson wanted the album to sound another. They clashed to the point when Butler was fired or quit, depends on what story you believe. Anderson and Bulter as much as they hated each other at that point, really needed each other. They both worked off each other brilliantly but each others egos would not take it. Anderson hated Butler's showing off with his guitar skills and Butler hated Anderson's lyrics. Both have different views on this album. Anderson thinks its brilliant while Butler thinks its very flawed and could of been better if he would of produced it his way. a b Tangari, Joe (7 June 2011). "Suede: Suede [Deluxe Edition] / Dog Man Star [Deluxe Edition]". Pitchfork . Retrieved 8 April 2013. The easiest thing to do when reviewing an album is to call the subject of your piece “A classic” or “A landmark” and all those other easy to trot out inanities. The fact is, very few albums are classic albums and even that depends on who is defining classic. There are many good and indeed very good albums of course, but few albums are complete works from beginning to end, ebbing and flowing perfectly, balancing light and shade and capturing your attention throughout.

Bernard Butler was in his music writing peak. Mat Osman was in his peak of bass inventiveness. Simon Gilbert was in his peak of drum variety. Suede themselves still regard the album as one of their best, but they have their reservations, particularly in regard to the production. Anderson had this to say about “ Moving”: When the record was eventually released, it caused barely a ripple on the music scene; Blur and Oasis were already sharing the spotlight with Pulp. The only enthusiastic group seemed to be the critics, having found an excuse to write ‘sophomore slump’ on yet another review.

Whether it was proclaiming himself to be a bisexual who'd never had a homosexual experience, executing pronounced and artful sniffs as punctuation in interviews, making queeny comments about his rivals, or composing lovely vignettes in his songs, Brett Anderson always had a taste for a nicely, if overly-wrought, turn of phrase. And so it is that, in his liner notes for the reissue of Suede's self-titled debut album, the singer writes: "And now the rush has past, the dust has settled and we're left with this; the album where it all began. This was our music, this was our lives; flawed, strange but sometimes beautiful". In those latter five words, Brett Anderson perfectly sums up the Suede that's presented in this extraordinary, warts and all series of reissues of the band's five albums. To close is the cinematic Still Life, I could write dissertations on the godliness of this song. To cut a long story short, it is the best piece of music ever written. The chords used are beyond perfect, the hanging suspension each time the title comes round. The way the song builds up to the orchestral coda, and keeps building right to the very end- those screaming french horns at the end just end off a perfect album perfectly.

I was so underwhelmed by it that I put it on my shelf to collect dust and I even intended on selling it. I thought it was boring. And way to over the top for its own good. Which is strange considering at the time I loved David Bowie and Roxy Music two artists that are over the top but I was just not buying what Anderson was selling. Well over a year has passed and I thought I would give Dog Man Star another go. Well its grown on me.....alot.
