Description

I bought this on a whim while browsing at a comic shop three or four years ago. The art is great (although the color tones are not my personal favorite); the story is just all right. The portrait of the big brother and his kid sister is fantastic kinds of real, but I guess I also expected the swapping thing to be really funny, and it was meh. If you’d like to talk about the bartering system and the history of money, this Youtube video is informative and very funny. It’s for older children though. You might like this fish-inspired Father’s Day card from The Best Ideas for Kids (just to show dad you really DO love him:) When Dad goes out to get some milk from the corner shop, a host of completely unexpected adventures befall him.

This is a very crazy read…kind of like Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, but simpler and madder in a this-is-from-a-child’s-perspective kind of way. The title says it all actually, when a boy seeks for something to trade for his friend Nathan’s two goldfish. Nathan rejects everything that the boy offers until the latter sets his eyes upon his dad. Nathan agrees, and the fun begins. My dad doesn’t pay much attention to anything when he’s reading his newspaper. This is a two-week plus Writing Root for The Day I Swapped my Dad for Two Goldfish by Neil Gaiman. The book will be used throughout to identify the features and conventions of written dialogue and use of speech marks, which children will draw upon to write their own missing scenes from the book. Children will consider the story from the perspective of Dad and write a diary entry in role. The sequence of leaning culminates in children using the cliffhanger at the end of the book to write their own sequel using the structure of the original story to plan and write their own. There is a Spelling Seed session for every week of the associated Writing Root. Coverage: Word List Words About the Art. With tertiary colors toned with gray washed over strong lines indicate the deep darkness of some childhoods and the strength of conviction to be un-bored. The plan is based on an engaging text that allows for exciting opportunities to develop the children’s reading, writing and spoken language. Wow! I love Gaiman's work. Will have to find this one. I'm sure the library has it. The illustrations seem to glow in an old sepia-colored newspapery way so they pull me in to the text immediately. ReplyWhat a weird and horrid book. Dark looming pictures and lots of people being horrible to each other. Threatening to tell tales on each other because they like someone / are adopted / are fat. Horrible. I enjoyed the matter-of-fact way in which the boy trades his dad for the two fish. Fish?!? His Dad is so boring that even goldfish seem more exciting! And I love how we never actually see the dad; he’s always hidden behind the paper! As the brother and sister begin the long search for their father it feels suspenseful. Where is he? Will they find him? What weird and wonderful objects has he been traded for?
