I was disappointed by this book. A lot of people compare this to A Series of Unfortunate Events, and although I haven't read those books (yes, I know I should) (I've read the first three of them now so I have a better understanding of how the books compare) and I have also seen the movie and I appreciate its darker, twisted humor. This book though, was annoying. Things had improved slightly last year when his parents had—literally—split their house down the middle, his father moving his half-house across the street. Cass is a survivalist that always predicts disasters, but they rarely come true. the writing style was the strongest point, best & the fun part. it started so mysteriously that just made me more intrigued only because of the style! (the story hadn't begun then!) the characters was good, I like Max-Ernest constant talking or trying to tell jokes, being helpful, Cass & her stubbornness & Owen & his mystery. Though there are some elements that get morbid, it is all handled well. It's not scarier than anything in Aladdin (1992). Theme Naming: Max-Ernest's name is a reference to the artist Max Ernst, and his younger brother Paul-Clay's name is a reference to artist Paul Klee. It's funny the way secrets work. If you don't know about a secret, it doesn't bother you. You go about your business without a care in the world. Everything's fine and dandy.
