About this deal

Adult characters initially treat a downed German pilot in a threatening manner, including spitting at him. By shining a spotlight on supplementary characters’ preconceptions and showing their progression towards change and acceptance, my class were able to connect with the injustices faced by refugees, both in the past and the present, on a far deeper level. I am sick and tired of the "mean girl becomes your bestie" trope that plagues contemporary kids' fiction. The main theme of this book is how peopole have to leave home to fight for their country but Olive soon realises that her father isn't coming home. The Times praised it as “a powerful story that sensitively portrays the impact of war on ordinary lives”.

I read through the book beforehand and then timed my teaching to coincide with the book so that my children were able to better visualise what I was teaching them. I enjoyed this book because there were a lot of mysterious things happening and at some points I didn't want to put the book down.Olive and her brother have been evacuated to Devon, but her older sister Sukie is still missing from the night of the bombs. A mysterious note found in the coat of her sister suggests that Sukie was involved in something dangerous, but Olive can't make the pieces fit together. After being evacuated, Olive and her brother Cliff are evacuated to Devon and the only place available is a lighthouse. My favourite character is Esther because she stands up to the most fierce, and even if she was a bully, that's changed now!

My favourite character was Olive because she had a lot of courage and she did things for other people that needed help. Her stories continue to delight and move me, and Letters from the Lighthouse does not disappoint at all.It shows you that just because you have a different religion, or you think differently, doesn’t mean you’re good or bad. This resource features large display letters which are perfect as the backdrop for a display about lighthouses as part of a Seaside topic. Set during WWII, we follow Olive and Cliff as they’re evacuated to the coast of Devon after months of heavy air raids across London.
