About this deal

It's going to be real interesting to watch the surrounding area as the seasons pass and see what the true long term effects of the pond end up being. In rotation system the paddy-field has to be prepared for raising fishes after the harvest of rice. To prevent the escape of juvenile shrimps at low tides, conical bag-nets are attached to the sluice gates. Herbivorous and omnivorous fishes are used for culture; generally common and Chinese carps and less frequently catfishes (Pangasius), Indian carps and tilapia.

Making sure your pigs have a functional place to sleep and find shelter from the elements is an important part of keeping pigs for meat. It hadn't rained for a couple weeks and it's been rather warm and sunny for the past few days so the pond was around the lowest I've seen it since shutting off the water. Sometimes this can be the only way to stop un-castrated boars from trying to get to sows; a breeding boar will swing and pull on a fence in an attempt to get to a female, and they can cause considerable damage in the process.

Pigs like to snack all day, so we leave the corn feeder available for when they wish to eat, but we also supplement their diet with scraps and any excess food we find along the way.

I've been very interested in the technique of gleying a pond with animals ever since I first read about it a couple years ago here. Permaculture words tend to have slightly or not so slightly different definitions then conventional meanings. This sealing effect is so amazing, in fact, that a lot of farmers avoid putting pigs on any land that is having drainage trouble – cuz pigs will make it worse. But Smithfield and the electric and gas utility Dominion Energy have formed a partnership with much bigger plans. The urine and dung of pigs are first allowed to the oxidation tanks (digestion chambers) where sedimentation and fermentation of the manure take place. The ruling classes had money and power, whilst most of the population were suffering and living in poverty. A mixture of grass and wooded areas is great for pigs; lacking this, you need to create a shady area in their outdoor enclosure that they can access on the hotter days of the year. Fish-cum-pig culture is practised at large in China where pigs are considered as “costless fertiliser factories”.
