Taking a small section of hair (smaller than you would for a curling wand) I brush downwards with the machine. It is 100% safe, and cannot cut healthy hair as it's only split ends which fall into the cutting chamber. In terms of usage, you definitely want to work in small sections, working your way around your head.

Although the machine didn’t get every last split end, we would say between 60 to 80% of our split ends were removed, depending on the hair type. You’ll have to do at least 3 (and up to 6) passes per strand to get noticeable results, depending on how many split ends you have. Understandably, it doesn’t remove every single split end - but it does significantly tidy the tips and help to keep it in a healthy condition.It works the fastest, has the two different length settings and is the quietest (surprisingly important when you’ll be spending quite a bit of time with it working away right next to your ears! While I haven’t had any problems, I read some people had reliability problems with the Lescolton, but possibly they’re just happening with frequent users.

The only downside is the the on switch is easily accidentally turned off when changing the direction of the split ender, hence just giving 4 stars.
